What is structural engineering and why is it important?

Do you find yourself constantly coming across the term “structural engineering” and not really knowing what it entails or how it differs from other forms of engineering?  Well, never fear BellMont is here to help you unpack what this fundamental engineering discipline is all about.

What is it?
Structural engineering is the application of maths and physics to materials such as concrete, stone, steel, timber and glass among others to ensure structures such as buildings, bridges, towers and other forms of infrastructure are able to withstand the demands placed upon them in a safe, sustainable and visually stunning manner.  In other words, structural engineers possess the skills to analyse the structural integrity and strength of a building and provide resolutions that are both financially and environmentally effective.

Why is it important?

Buildings, bridges, towers, dams and tunnels. What do they all have in common? Not only do they fall under the engineering discipline of structural engineering but, they are also frequently used by pedestrians on a daily basis.
Structural engineering is crucial as it enables people to go about their daily activities without hazard, ensuring that the structures they encounter are safe to use and are durable for years to come. Without structural engineers the world we have come to know would be nowhere near as safe or sustainable, we would be spending ridiculous amounts of money and resources knocking down structures to build new ones, in a constant state of worry that the places we reside in or encounter are not structurally adequate.

BellMont have specialised in the field of structural and civil engineering for over 17 years and truly understand the impact our industry has. We have played an integral part in the transformation of hundreds of structures over those years and have witnessed the power a structural engineer has in ensuring that future generations can appreciate the architecture of both our time and the past . Now that we have welcomed you to the wonderful world of structural engineering, why not head over to the case studies section of our website to see the transformative works the engineers within this field are capable of!
