Australian Standard AS 1170 is very c l e a r o n t h e p e r f o rm a n c e requirements of awnings for imposed and other loadings.
It is these loadings and the physical condition of the awnings after years of exposure that Councils throughout NSW are requiring Owners to have confirmed by suitable professional Engineers.
The stringent requirements aim to ensure structural integrity of the materials along with the performance of the design and “as installed” awning.
Generally, the older awnings are those which exhibit most pronounced signs of deterioration, however age is not the only factor. Proximity to the ocean, frequency of maintenance and construction type also affect the longevity of the structure.
