Reinforcement corrosion and loss of structural integrity

With majestic views of the Manly Peninsular, Bridge Deck Apartments offers residences of superior quality. A multi level residential apartment complex constructed in the 1970’s of reinforced concrete, Bridgedeck unfortunately consists of the aggressive Magnesite material—used as the flooring underlay system to floor slabs. The long-term effects of magnesite to reinforced concrete were unknown during the 1970’s, however today, the effects  are well understood and in some instances, of a catastrophic nature.
Bridegdeck Apartments is experiencing such severe deterioration within the reinforced concrete slabs of numerous units. The proactive Owners Corporation, together with Fluid Building Services (FBS) and BellMont have embarked on effecting the necessary structural repairs to these areas.
The extent of deterioration has proceeded to affecting the structural integrity of these areas and the requirement for structural design during these repairs has been necessary in order to ensure the resulting repairs re-establish the integrity to the structure.
Whilst in a dry state, magnesite acts as the ideal insulator, however, when combined with moisture, the highly corrosive salts released into the steel reinforced concrete create one  of the most highly corrosive environments for steel – resulting in the corrosion and expansion of steel by up to 700% of the original volume. The most notable corrosion was located along the balcony door locations—leading to the cantilevered balconies.
The scope for remedial works was developed by BellMont which included extensive design review for steel replacement, the introduction of sacrificial Anodes and the use of a high strength polymer modified repair mortars to reinstate the floor slabs. A propping schedule was determined by BellMont and implemented by FBS which required the cantilevered balconies to be propped down to ground level.
The project continues whilst constantly providing innovative solutions suitable to a fully occupied residential complex.

Thanks for pointing out that deterioration can affect structural integrity. I would imagine that anyone would want to avoid corrosion or any further damage. I think they should look for concrete reinforcement to ensure the successful delivery of technically challenging and iconic landmark projects.
